A Life Tip: Be Skeptical

Typed 30th September, 2007 at 1:38 am

I have been on this planet 17 years and you, dear reader, might not think that is enough time for me to have gained the required amount of life experience to write this post. I however think that the earlier you follow this piece of advice the quicker you will mature and become a more well rounded person.

Firstly what does it mean to be skeptical, I don’t want to use the cliche, however if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Being skeptical is simply not being so easy to trust new people, questioning morals and beliefs of others and learning solid information for yourself not just half-truths from others as you become known as the gullible fool.

People you have known for years may turn around to you and tell a blatant lie, its true it can’t be helped and its not fun. You will most likely believe them because you have built up a trust around this person and aren’t any longer skeptical to them. If you were then you find yourself a lot more in control of your own destiny.

I have been in this exact position with a girlfriend who slightly “withheld” certain information. We had been going out for about a year and had nothing but love for each other, with love comes trust. The issue with which she fell down because I trusted her to go out get pissed and stay faithful. When I eventually did find out the truth, no not from her, from a group of my friends I immediately questioned my girlfriend about the incident.

Her convenient excuse was she had too much to drink, the simple fact that I trusted her enough to go out drinking for the first time by herself was enough to break up our relationship and had I simply been more skeptical I might still have that relationship.

To be skeptical is to learn more and dig a little deeper, not simply skimming the surface of a person or fact. If you believed everything you read, or heard you would be called a fool and some research and confirmation on the topic at hand can do the world of good. It can make you open your eyes to new levels of understanding, improve your relationships and increase your learning capabilities.
