The Problem with Censorship

Typed 29th June, 2007 at 3:39 pm

There are many problems with society today, but one that came to the forefront of my mind recently I thought so passionately about it I thought I would write a post on it. That of course is the problem of censorship in the media and films. I believe that a child should not be allowed to see violence, after all children are impressionable and we don’t want kids growing up to be violent. However I think that sex should not be censored as viscously as it is.

If there is so much as a glance of the female form in a movie the BBFC will automatically give the film at least a 15 rating regardless what the rest of the film contains. I am not saying open the flood gates to pornography for children but I would think parents would want there child to grow up and have sex yet they will never allow them to see it.

Surely parents wouldn’t let their children go and see the latest Die Hard film which is rated a PG-13 in America which basically means anyone can see it. All the Die Hard films contain many violent gunfights, death and massacre, yet if there were to be a sex scene it would be an outrage in a PG-13.

Why do so many people feel the need to keep children away from what is acceptable and within the law? But they let them watch gunfights featuring mass manslaughter which is most certainly NOT within the law.

That’s just my two cents on the issue, and to quote many people before me “Censorship Causes Blindness”.

They’re banning Manhunt 2 because of it’s content. To be honest, I think games, films etc are getting overly violent, and maybe there should be limits. However, I disagree with the sweep it under the carpet bureaucrats who think they’ll solve the world problems by banning things.

There were wars before video games, there’ll be wars after them too. Same with violence, rape, murder, you name it. If you’re going to ban things because they reportedly “spread violence and hate”, then you have to ban most religion, and there’ll be world outcry over that.

Instead of banning the video games and films, you should look at the people committing the offences: There’ll be a link between mental problems and the offenders, I’ll bet my life on it.

Well we saw that article in the Metro newspaper of a 19 year old who stabbed a nurse to death resulting in a total of 72 stabs. The article has to pass blame from the obviously insane teenager to the violent videogames he plays, if only to please those close to him.

I have been playing videogames with excessively violent content, they have affected me. I believe they have made me less violent because as I react to violence I see on screen I realise it is a bad thing and i don’t want to replicate it in real life situations.

The teenager involved in the situation was quoted as saying “I was kinda surprised when I heard it. It does not really bother me.” This is the exact opposite was I react to violence first hand. That is one seriously fucked-up kid.
